“I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them." (Acts 20.29)

        Boston Catholic Journal “The time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." The Sorrowful Mysteries in Downloadable Audio Files

Dedicated to Mary, Auxilium Christianorum  — the Most Holy Mother of God, Help of Christians

T
he Rosary consists of four Mysteries that are divided into twenty decades as follows:

  • The Joyful Mysteries (5 decades)
  • The Luminous Mysteries (5 decades)
  • The Sorrowful Mysteries (5 decades)
  • The Glorious Mysteries (5 decades)

Below, the First Mystery is prayed:

The Sorrowful Mysteries

Each of these five Mysteries are recited — prayed, really — in Latin as our forefathers had prayed the Rosary for over a thousand years. You can follow the audio presentation in the text accompanying it below.  Please remember that each Mystery, as you listen to it, is being prayed — and not merely recited. We invite you to enter into these prayers with us. The audio files are not "professional recordings" ... they are prayers. We humbly ask you to overlook what is imperfect within them.

Our special thanks to the cloistered Community of Poor Clare Colettine Nuns of Ty Mam Duw in Wales for preparing the text for this presentation, for their loving encouragement, and for their constant prayers through which alone this project is possible.

The Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane
  I. Primum Mysterium Dolorosa: Jesus in Horto Olivarum (The Agony in the Garden)

32
Sufficit : venit hora: ecce Filius hominis tradetur in manus peccatorum. 42 Surgite, eamus: ecce qui me tradet, prope est.

Pater noster, Qui es in coelis,
sanctificetur nomen Tuum;
adveniat regnum Tuum;
fiat voluntas Tua,
sicut in coelo et in terra.
Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie;
et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris;
et ne nos inducas in tentationem; sed libera nos a malo.

Amen.

(Decies repetita: Repeat each "Ave Maria" 10 times):

Ave Maria, gratia plena,
Dominus tecum;
benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

Gloria Patri,
et Filio,
et Spiritui Sancto.
Sicut erat in principio,
et nunc,
et semper,
et in saecula saeculorum.

Amen.

O Bone Jesu, libera nos a peccatis nostris; libera nos ab ignibus gehennae; perduc in paradisum omnes animas praesertim eas quae plus misericordia tua indigent!

The Scourging at the Pillar
II. Secundum Mysterium Dolorosa: Iesus Flagellatus (the Scourging at the Pillar)

At illi dixerunt: Barabbam. 23 Dicunt omnes: Crucifigatur. Ait illis præses : Quid enim mali fecit ? At illi magis clamabant dicentes: Crucifigatur.

Pater noster, Qui es in coelis,
sanctificetur nomen Tuum;
adveniat regnum Tuum;
fiat voluntas Tua,
sicut in coelo et in terra.
Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie;

The Crowning of Thorns
III. Tertium Mysterium Dolorosa: Iesus Spinis Coronatus (Jesus is Crowned with Thorns)

Jesus Carries His Cross
  IV. Quartum Mysterium Dolorosa: Iesus Crucem Portans (Jesus carries His Cross)

"15 Illi autem clamabant : Tolle, tolle, crucifige eum. Dicit eis Pilatus: Regem vestrum crucifigam? Responderunt pontifices: Non habemus regem, nisi Cæsarem. 16 Tunc ergo tradidit eis illum ut crucifigeretur. Susceperunt autem Jesum, et eduxerunt.
+

 The Crucifixion of Our Lord Jesus Christ
  V. Quintum Mysterium Dolorosa: Iesus in Cruce Moritur (Jesus dies on the Cross)

46 Et clamans voce magna Jesus ait: Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum. Et hæc dicens, expiravit."

Pater noster, Qui es in coelis,
sanctificetur nomen Tuum;

Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae!
vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus, exules filii Evae.
Ad te suspiramus,
gementes, et flentes, in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia ergo, advocata nostra,
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria!

Ora pro nobis, Sancta Dei Genetrix,
Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.

Oremus:

Gratiam tuam quaesumus, Domine,
mentibus nostris infunde, ut qui,
angelo nuntiante, Christi Filii tui
incarnationem cognovimus
per passionem eius et crucem,
ad resurrectionem gloriam perducamur,
per eundem Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

In nomine Patris,
et Filii,
et Spiritus Sancti.

Amen.
