Dedicated to Mary, Auxilium Christianorum — the Most Holy Mother of God, Help of Christians,

and the most perfect of all God’s creation

This is perhaps the simplest way to understand the Holy Rosary:

The entire Rosary consists of: 15 MYSTERIES:

5 Joyful Mysteries
(prayed on Mondays and Thursdays)
These are:
(1) The Annunciation to the Virgin Mary by the Archangel St. Gabriel that she was going to be the Mother of Jesus the Savior
(2) The Visitation of Mary to her Cousin St. Elizabeth (who is pregnant with St. John the Baptist)
(3) The Nativity: The Birth of Jesus
(4) The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple
(5) The Finding of Jesus in the Temple
5 Glorious Mysteries
(prayed on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays)
These are:
(1) The Resurrection of Jesus
(2) The Ascension of Jesus to His Father in Heaven
(3) The Descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Apostles (Pentecost)
(4) The Assumption of Mary Body and Soul into Heaven
(5) The Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven
5 Sorrowful Mysteries
(prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays)
These are:
(1) The Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane
(2) The Scourging at the Pillar
(3) The Crowning with Thorns
(4) The Carrying of the Cross
(5) The Crucifixion and Daeth of Jesus on the Cross

Within each Mystery above, as we can see, we contemplate 5 unique episodes in the lives of Jesus and Mary

each Mystery is divided into 5 Decades (or sets of 10 prayers)
each Decade consists of
(1) Pater Noster (Our Father)
and (10) Ave Marias (Hail Marys)
At the end of each Decade, the Doxologia Minor (Glory be ...) is recited, followed by the Fatima Prayer (“O Bone, Jesu ...”)

I. Primum Mysterium Gaudiosum: Annunciatio (the Annunciation)

II. Secundum Mysterium Gaudiosum: Visitatio (the Visitation)

^“39Exsurgens autem Maria in diebus illis, abiit in montana cum festinatione, in civitatem Juda: ⁴⁰ Et intravit in domum Zachariæ, et salutavit Elisabeth. ⁴¹ Et factum est, ut audivit salutationem Mariæ Elisabeth, exsultavit infans in utero ejus: et repleta est Spiritu Sancto Elisabeth: ⁴² Et exclamavit voce magna, et dixit: Benedicta tu inter mulieres, et benedictus fructus ventris tui. ⁴³ Et unde hoc mihi, ut veniat mater Domini mei ad me? ⁴⁴ Ecce enim ut facta est vox salutationis tuæ in auribus meis, exsultavit in gaudio infans in utero meo.” (Sancte Lucae 1.39-44)

III. Tertium Mysterium Gaudiosum: Nativitas (the Nativity, the Birth of Iesus)

“¹⁵ Et factum est, ut discesserunt ab eis angeli in cælum : pastores loquebantur ad invicem: Transeamus usque Bethlehem, et videamus hoc verbum, quod factum est, quod Dominus ostendit nobis. ¹⁶ Et venerunt festinantes: et invenerunt Mariam, et Ioseph, et infantem positum in præsepio. ¹⁷ Videntes autem cognoverunt de verbo, quod dictum erat illis de puero hoc. ¹⁸ Et omnes qui audierunt, mirati sunt: et de his quæ dicta erant a pastoribus ad ipsos. ¹⁹ Maria autem conservabat omnia verba hæc, conferens in corde suo. ²⁰ Et reversi sunt pastores glorificantes et laudantes Deum in omnibus quæ audierant et viderant, sicut dictum est ad illos.” (Sancte Lucae 2.15-20)

IV. Quartum Mysterium Gaudiosum: Presentatio (the Presentation in the Temple)

“²⁹ Nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace: ³⁰ Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum. ³¹ Quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum: ³² lumen ad revelationem gentium, et gloriam plebis tuæ Israël. ³³ Et erat pater ejus et mater mirantes super his quæ dicebantur de illo. ³⁴ Et benedixit illis Simeon, et dixit ad Mariam matrem ejus: Ecce positus est hic in ruinam et in resurrectionem multorum in Israël, et in signum cui contradicetur: ³⁵ Et tuam ipsius animam pertransibit gladius ut revelentur ex multis cordibus cogitationes.” (Sancte Lucae 2.29-35)

V. Quintum Mysterium Gaudiosum: Inventio in Templo (the Finding in the Temple)

^“41Et ibant parentes ejus per omnes annos in Jerusalem, in die solemni Paschæ. ⁴² Et cum factus esset annorum duodecim, ascendentibus illis Ierosolymam secundum consuetudinem diei festi, ⁴³ consummatisque diebus, cum redirent, remansit puer Iesus in Ierusalem, et non cognoverunt parentes ejus. ⁴⁴ Existimantes autem illum esse in comitatu, venerunt iter diei, et requirebant eum inter cognatos et notos. ⁴⁵ Et non invenientes, regressi sunt in Ierusalem, requirentes eum. ⁴⁶ Et factum est, post triduum invenerunt illum in templo sedentem in medio doctorum, audientem illos, et interrogantem eos. ⁴⁷ Stupebant autem omnes qui eum audiebant, super prudentia et responsis ejus. ⁴⁸ Et videntes admirati sunt. I am writing you this letter so that you may know that no good deeds go unnoticed in the eyes of God. I have listened to the audio files on your website and I want to tell you that your whole team working at The Boston Catholic Journal did an excellent job not only with the one-hundred and fifty Psalms, but also with the Holy Rosary (it is especially helpful with the Rosary that the reader is able to follow along on the same page, and I do understand how there is a link which one can go to in order to follow along with the psalms as well).

As far a sound quality goes, after listen to about twelve-fifteen Psalms ranging from the first Psalm all the way to the last one, the sound quality is not only consistent but at the same time sharp and clear. The speaker does a good job of speaking at a steady pace in order that the listener may be able to follow along as well as reflect on that particular Psalm.

In an era where the classics and everything associated with it is slowly fading away, it is refreshing to not only see, but to hear what our fathers heard growing up and what their father’s heard, back to the time of the Roman Republic.

In this season of Lent, many people seem to get lost in its intended purpose of preparing for Easter ...with worrying about getting their ashes (solely for the purpose of just wearing them in public so people can see they are a “good” Catholic), or what they are going to give up for Lent—like their large ice coffee everyday—when the truth of the matter is none of that stuff (giving up coffee, chocolate, etc) is going to bring you closer to God.

I personally tend to look at Lent not so much of what you can “give up” but more of what you can “give”: one can give more time to God by going Church a couple days a week, or give more time to praying in the morning as well as at night; you can give your attention to people who are in need. Or as pertaining to your website, you can give the time it takes to listen to four Psalms a day and be done with all of them just in time for Easter.

I do understand the concept of self-discipline and giving up things that you find enjoyable or pleasing but, I just believe that God would find an increase prayer time and time of self reflection more pleasing to him than giving up soda for Lent (especially since the only reason you gave up soda was that you wanted to lose ten pounds during Lent and it has nothing to do with self-discipline).

Your website has provided many people the opportunity to prepare and cleanse themselves throughout the duration of Lenten season and in essence bring them closer to Christ which is what Lent is really all about.

I hope you and your team of men at The Boston Catholic Journal keep up the good work. For there is no greater gift than to bring someone closer to Christ, especially since if you take one step towards Christ…he takes two steps towards you. So because of you many people are taking the step in the right direction, towards God.

Dear Mr. Editor,

I have long since 'Bookmarked ' the Boston Catholic Journal as I am so interested in the audio files that you offer for downloads on site.

I always think that the layout of the Boston Journal is so easy to navigate, and indeed the 'Free Disc" that you sent to me some time ago has been much used and appreciated.

The voice files of the psalms have helped me greatly to appreciate the beauty of Latin and they are read so prayerfully, and in a way I can enter into, thank you for the hours of devotion you must have put into the project.

But I am particularly interested in the wonderful presentation of the Rosary in Latin, it is so prayerful, thank you so much — especially the ' Luminous Mysteries ', many religious sites on the net have the Regular mysteries but far fewer the Mysteries of Light.

The reader of the Rosary has such a good voice, well metered, and so prayerful, I can think of many sick people who would derive great comfort to pray along with these audio's, so thank you for all your time.

Please extend my gratitude to your staff, I see your site is dedicated to Mary, well she has certainly blessed the work of your hands and lips.
